Book Review for Chrysanthemum Stones

"Upon hearing of the pending publication of Tom Elias and Hiromi Nakaoji’s book Chrysanthemum Stones: The Story of Stone Flowers, I was anxious to get my hands on one as soon as it was available. Because of my many years of suiseki experience, I was contacted by the “Bonsai and Stone Appreciation Magazine”, an international publication devoted to the study of these art forms. They asked if I was interested in writing a review of the book, to which I agreed. I soon had a copy of the book, which was a pleasure to read. Below is my article:"

Chrysanthemum Stones: The Story of Stone Flowers

"These three images show some of the magnificent serpentine boulders unique to the Eel River. The images were taken in the Fall of 2009. We have experienced over three years of drought and, for us collectors, this makes collecting a pleasure. All our suiseki friends agree that this is the lowest water level we have seen in many years. These boulders are large, with some of the largest seen in the image that shows the smallness of a collector."
